Casual On-Call Bus Driver - Williams Lake, BC, Canada

Applications now being accepted for the position of Casual On-Call Bus Driver.

Reporting to the Manager, a Bus Driver provides transportation of passengers while obeying traffic and safety regulations while driving in a variety of road and weather conditions.

This is an on-call, as required position, with the potential to lead to full time and permanent employment if desired however it's also a great fit for a retired person looking to stay active and keep a foot in the workplace while still having schedule flexibility. Casual on-call drivers have the ability to accept or turn down jobs as they choose.

All jobs are primarily booked in advance with occasional same day or last minute emergency coverage needed.

Work varies and is not routine in nature. Jobs are primarily customer directed and could be a single day local site seeing tour, regular transportation of passengers in conjunction with local tourism operators, or multi-day group travel out of our area but could also be set route Inter-City service.

Required Qualifications:
  • Valid B.C. Class 1 or 2 driver’s license with an Air Endorsement with a safe driving record
  • A driver’s abstract to be provided annually

Necessary Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and safety precautions to be taken when driving buses
  • Sufficient physical strength to lift materials and equipment, ability to carry out safe working practices including the ability to use appropriate lifting and carrying techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively with passengers and deliver a positive customer experience
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to direct passengers, with authority and diplomacy, to ensure appropriate and safe behaviour

Duties include:
  • Drive a bus in order to transport passengers from designated pick-up and delivery locations, both routine and special (e.g. School field trips, sporting events, tourism charters, etc.)
  • Conduct daily inspections of the vehicle, prior to operation, to check the safety of basic mechanical features, as per departmental policy. Maintains vehicle's fluids such as fuel, engine oil, coolant, etc. at the correct levels
  • Explains to passengers basic safety items such as safe operation of windows; and the use/location of emergency exits, fire extinguishers and first aid kit
  • Maintains order and adherence to safety rules among passengers during transport and when boarding and leaving bus
  • Sweeps the interior of the bus daily and ensures its general tidiness
  • Completes sanitization protocols
  • Bus washing as directed
  • Report any mechanical problems as soon as possible to supervisor or designate
  • Following departmental guidelines reports any incident/accident involving bus or passengers to the Manager as soon as possible
  • Completes basic records and reports related to inspections, passenger behavior, etc.
  • Maintains professionalism, ethical behavior and confidentiality
  • Performs other related duties as may reasonably be expected of a person in this position
